A treasure chest buried in the Rockies set off a mad rush to claim its riches. It cost several men their lives.

In 2010, art dealer and adventurer Forrest Fenn announced that he’d buried a treasure chest filled with gold, rare coins, jewelry, and precious artifacts somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. Valued at over $1 million, the treasure was meant to inspire adventure and get people outdoors. Fenn published a poem in his memoir The Thrill of the Chase, that gave clues to the treasure’s hidden whereabouts.

A Worldwide Obsession Begins

Fenn’s announcement captured global attention. Thousands of people, from amateur treasure hunters to seasoned adventurers, pored over his poem and searched vast stretches of the Rockies. Online forums sprang up, dissecting his every word for hidden meanings. For many, it became an all-consuming obsession fueled by mystery, greed, and the promise of untold wealth.

Danger In The Wilderness

Fenn intended the hunt to be an invigorating outdoor adventure, but the rugged unpredictable terrain posed serious hazards. The Rocky Mountains are vast and often treacherous, with steep cliffs, rushing rivers, extreme weather, and wild animals. Many searchers underestimated the danger and ventured out into remote areas without much preparation for the harsh conditions.

Lives Lost In The Search

Tragically, at least five people lost their lives while searching for Fenn’s treasure. They either drowned while attempting to cross rivers; or they perished from exposure or accidents in lonely back-country areas. Despite warnings from Fenn to stay out of dangerous locations, and avoid unnecessary risk, the fever-dream of fabulous riches drove some to take extreme chances. One crazed treasure-seeker even broke into Fenn’s home.

Fenn’s Response To The Deaths

As the fatalities mounted, Fenn expressed his sorrow but kept right on saying that the treasure was hidden in a place that didn’t require dangerous climbing or hazardous activities. He insisted that it was accessible to anyone who used logic and caution. But the authorities still urged Fenn to end the hunt due to safety concerns.

The Mystery Is Finally Solved

After a decade of misadventures and wild speculation, Fenn proclaimed in June 2020 that the treasure had finally been found. The identity of the discoverer was kept secret at first, adding still another layer of mystery. At last it was revealed that Jack Stuef, a medical student from Michigan, had found the chest somewhere in Wyoming, bringing the saga to an end.

A Community Divided

News of the treasure’s discovery brought mixed reactions. Some celebrated the conclusion of a decade-long adventure, while others were skeptical, questioning whether the find was genuine or staged. Some people even launched lawsuits claiming they’d been close to solving the mystery, and accusing Fenn of deception.

The Legal Aftermath

After the treasure was found, legal disputes unfolded. Multiple lawsuits were filed against both Fenn and the finder, alleging fraud, conspiracy, or theft of intellectual property. Though most cases were dismissed, the legal battles added more intrigue to the already dramatic saga of Fenn’s treasure.

Forrest Fenn Was No More

Forrest Fenn passed away a few months after the treasure was found, leaving behind a murky legacy. While his treasure hunt captivated thousands and inspired countless outdoor adventures, it also resulted in obsession, danger and tragedy. Such is the price some men are willing to pay for the ultimate glory of finding buried treasure.

The End Of The Chase, But Not The Fascination

Even with the treasure found, interest in the hunt remains strong. Books, documentaries, and ongoing discussions continue to analyze Fenn’s clues and motivations. His treasure hunt may be over, but its legend lives on as a real-life adventure tale.

A Chest Filled With Loot

The valuables found in the chest were auctioned off in December 2022, and fetched $1.3 million in total. As for the secret hiding place of the treasure, Mr Stuef has kept the exact location secret. Most speculate that it was found within the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park, and Stuef has said that he did find the chest in Wyoming but hasn’t yet been any more specific than that.
