She Has A Place In Pop Culture Infamy
Claudine Longet had a singing voice that was soft and ethereal. But after hearing her story, it can sound absolutely demented. You see, after Longet lost one romantic partner, she decided she would do whatever it took to keep the next. The mystery surrounding what happened to him sent Longet into a courtroom for one of the most talked about trials of the 20th century.
Once the judge had made a decision, Longet’s next outrageous act confirmed her place in pop culture infamy forever.

1. She Wanted to Entertain
Claudine Georgette Longet was born on January 29, 1842, in Paris, France. She apparently had a plan for her future starting from an early age. All she knew was that she wanted to entertain people. With that vague goal in mind, Longet started dancing for tourists as a teenager. She had no idea that this little side hustle would lead to something big.
2. Someone Spotted Her
Somehow, after dancing for tourists, Claudine Longet ended up on TV. Once you're on the air waves, anything can happen—and it did. A nightclub promoter by the name of Lou Walters saw her on TV. Walters, whose daughter would grow up to become celebrated journalist Barbara Walters, saw something in Longet. He contacted her and wanted her to dance at his nightclub.
But this was going to involve a very big move.

3. She Had An Asset
As it turned out, the nightclub that Walters was promoting was far away—in the US. Longet threw caution to the wind, and was soon dancing at the Tropicana Hotel & Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. Being French was an asset as the show was the Folies Bergere, and this was the first time it had hit an American stage. But it wasn't her dancing skills that moved her career forward.
It was crazy, dumb luck.
4. She Had A Meet-Cute
It’s not unusual for people to have bizarre and unlikely fantasies where they suddenly get famous. Well, Longet’s is up there with the best. She was having trouble with her car in Las Vegas when a kind gentleman pulled over to give her a hand. Maybe Longet noticed how handsome this man was who had offered to help her.
After a closer look, she probably even recognized him.

5. He Was Famous
Claudine Longet certainly recognized the man helping her with her car. It was none other than chart-topping singer Andy Williams. At this point in his career, Williams had already had hit records in the United States and England. There were much bigger things headed Williams' way, but for now, he just had to deal with the sparks flying between him and Longet.

6. He Was Head Over Heels
The sparks flying at the side of the road between Longet and Williams soon turned into dating. On December 15, 1961, they walked down the aisle and became husband and wife. Williams later described his new wife as "a beautiful, athletic, slender, petite brunette with large doe eyes”.
But this relationship would need much more than just a physical attraction.
7. She Watched Him Become A Star
A year after they married, William’s career really began taking off. He got a big invite to sing at the Academy Awards in 1962. The song was “Moon River” for the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. His star was rising fast, and he soon had another offer. They were giving him his own TV show.
But what did all this mean for Longet?

8. She Was A Mother Of Three
Claudine Longet spent the first few years of her married life with Williams, having children. They had three in all. But being the wife of a singer with his own TV show also had its perks. She appeared as a guest on The Andy Williams Show more than once. She also appeared on TV shows with hosts like Bobby Darin and Tom Jones.
But she also wanted to act.

9. She Was The Love Interest
In 1963, Longet branched out into acting. She appeared in multiple episodes of the sitcom McHale’s Navy. Here she played the love interest of Tim Conway’s goofy Ensign Parker. Once again, Longet was using her French background to her advantage. Her character’s name was Yvette Gerard, and she was a French beauty from a South Pacific Island.
With McHale’s Navy, Longet would have a smooth sailing to feature films.

10. She Hit The Big Screen
When McHale’s Navy became a movie, they kept Claudine Longet on. Her character from the series was no longer needed, so they just made her into basically the same character—but with a different name. She was now Andrea Bouchard. Sadly, the producers did not invite Longet for the next installment: McHale's Navy Joins the Air Force.
It looked like she'd be back on television.

11. She Floated
Longet hadn't really made it as a film star. What followed for her were numerous guest appearances in TV shows like Twelve O’Clock High, The Name of the Game, and Hogan’s Heroes. Sure, it was good being on TV. But it didn't feel like her career was exactly taking off.
Then something amazing happened.
12. She Appeared On A Special Episode
Longet’s 1966 appearance on Run For Your Life likely seemed like just one more guest appearance. But there was a difference. First of all, her episode was the first season finale of a very popular show. She was also given a song to sing. Again, she appears as a French woman, and she sings a bossa nova song called “Meditation”.
This song would ultimately change her career.

13. She Was Captivating
There was something about Longet’s singing in Run For or Life that captivated audiences. One such captivated audience member was Herb Alpert, who just so happened to be a co-founder of A&M records. When Longet met Alpert at a New Orleans club, her life took a drastic turn.

14. She Succeeded On Her Own
Alpert was so sure about Longet’s success as a singer that he offered her a contract right there and then. This began her four year association with A&M Records, This was huge for Longet. She’d gotten this based on her own talent, and it had nothing to do with her famous husband. She would eventually record five albums with A&M Records.
But there was tragedy in her future.

15. She Had Important Friends
With some hit songs and a famous husband on your arm, it's easy to make friends with influential people. Claudine Longet and Andy Williams became friendly with Senator Robert F Kennedy and his wife Ethel. In fact, they had some very intimate double dates. They would spend weekends at Williams’ California homes or Longet and Williams would spend time at Kennedy’s Hickory Hill home in Virginia.
This foursome also liked to hit the town.

16. They Were Going To Hit The Town
On June 4, 1968, Longet and Williams had plans with the Kennedys to go to the exclusive LA nightclub called The Factory. Before hitting the dance floor, the Kennedys had to attend the Democratic Party presidential primary. The plans to go to the Factory were tentative, but Kennedy said that if the plans were on, he’d make a hand gesture on TV that indicated it was a go. Longet and Williams watched the TV closely to see whether the night out would happen or not.
What they got was something they could never have imagined.

17. They Were Glued To The TV
Longet and Williams were actually watching the TV in a suite in The Ambassador Hotel—the same place where the primary was happening. Kennedy had won the primary, and it was after midnight. Longet and Williams were still waiting to get the hand signal that their night on the town was going to happen.
That’s when they heard something that sounded like shots.
18. They Got the Worst News
Longet and Williams heard shots ring out just after midnight somewhere in the Ambassador Hotel. Williams left Longet and rushed to see what had happened. He received the worst news. Someone had shot the senator and friend, Robert Kennedy.
Longet and Williams rushed to the hospital.

19. She Mourned The Loss Of A Friend
Claudine Longet and Andy Williams remained at the Good Samaritan Hospital until doctors announced that Kennedy had succumbed to his injuries. Later, a television crew recorded footage of Longet crying uncontrollably at the funeral at St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. Longet and Williams joined the funeral train that consisted of 21 cars.
This was a devastating event for Longet.
20. They Paid A Tribute
Years later, when Longet and Williams had a son, they wanted to pay homage to their friend, the fallen Senator Kennedy. To do this, they named their third son Robert. This son, who became a stuntman, is currently in a relationship with actor Mariel Hemingway, who is Earnest Hemingway’s daughter—another man who came to a tragic end.
Longet had to put her sadness aside and focus on her career.
21. She Got An Amazing Offer
Now that Claudine Longet was a recording star, an exciting film offer came in. This was not like McHale’s Navy, where her name appeared at the bottom of a list of actors. In The Party, Longet got second billing to Peter Sellers, who had already made a huge name for himself in the The Pink Panther movie series.
But this was not going to be an ordinary film.
Screenshot from The Party, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (1968)
22. It Was Going To Be A Challenge
Sellers had already teamed up with director Blake Edwards for The Pink Panther movies, but this was going to be something different. The script was only 63 pages, so a lot of the dialogue was going to be ad-libbed. Sellers was the Robin Williams of this era, so Longet could expect anything—especially the unexpected.
Maybe she was in over her head.
23. She Had To Keep A Straight Face
In The Party, Sellers plays an inept Indian actor. Of course, for most of the film, all eyes are on Sellers, and everyone else is just necessary scenery. But one thing about being in a scene with Sellers is that you have to try and keep a straight face. Longet survived, but you can see her struggling.
This film was not without its controversy.

24. She Was In A Hit
One problem some critics had with The Party was that a white man was playing an Indian. A lot of that criticism fell apart when the Prime Minister of India said she was a huge fan of the movie. This news was good. Claudine Longet was in a box-office smash hit that would later turn into a cult film.
It was time to take the next step on the ladder to fame.
25. She Took A Step Backward
Instead of capitalizing on her success out of the shadow of her husband, Longet got back under it. For some reason, Longet decided to record music with Barnaby Records, which her husband owned. Longet released two albums and some singles under her husband’s label.
But not everything was hunky dory with his marriage.
26. It Came To An End
The truth was, Longet’s marriage to Williams wasn’t exactly floating on air. In fact, they had legally separated in 1970. Both parties were saying that the separation was completely amicable. After all, they had three children to raise together. Since they had separated, Longet felt free to meet new men.
What she found was a very eligible bachelor.
27. She Met A Guy
In 1972, Claudine Longet attended a celebrity ski race on the California ski mountain called Bear Valley. At the event, she met past US Olympic team member Spider Sabich. Many considered Sabich to be one of the most desirable men in America. He was rich, handsome, athletic, and single. There was instant attraction between the two, and a relationship started.
Things moved quickly from there.

28. She Found Out
Claudine Longet made a big move and brought her three children to live with Sabich in Aspen, Colorado. At first, it went well, but then Sabich must have wondered what he’d got himself into. The most eligible bachelor in America was suddenly living the life of a father of three. Reports say that he was thinking of ending his relationship and going back to the life of a single man.
Somehow Longet must have figured this out.
29. He Was Leaving Her Behind
From the outside, the relationship seemed to be going well. But something happened in March of 1976 that suggested otherwise. Sabich had plans to go out, and he hadn't invited Longet. He was getting ready to take a shower when Longet entered the bathroom.
That’s when Sabich saw what was in her hands.
30. It’s A Mystery
Sabich was getting into the shower when Longet entered the bathroom carrying a pistol. What happened next is still a complete mystery. What we do know is that Sabich ended up shot in the abdomen. An ambulance eventually arrived and rushed Sabich to the hospital. He had a serious injury.
It was a race to save his life.
31. Only She Knew The Truth
Sadly, Sabich did not make it to the hospital alive. He passed due to blood loss in the ambulance with Longet by his side. Now there was only one person who could say what happened in the bathroom that night.
All eyes turned to Claudine Longet. She had some explaining to do.
32. She Needed A Friend
Authorities almost immediately charged Claudine Longet with manslaughter. Before the trial could even begin, Longet got a visitor. Her ex-husband, Andy Williams, flew into Aspen to be at her side and pay for her lawyers. Remember, they had divorced and stayed friends. It was a good thing, because Longet was going to need a friend at her side.
This trial was going to get ugly.
33. She Had A Story
Longet’s story went like this: Sabich was showing her how to use the pistol, and it accidentally went off. Which seems strange, as the report said that he was preparing to have a shower. It seems weird that he would stop getting ready to shower and suddenly start giving Longet a pistol maintenance class.
There were other strikes against Longet.
34. She Had Something In Her Blood
Authorities took a blood sample from Claudine Longet, and it had some news that would not be good for her defense. The report showed that Longet had used an illicit substance some time before the incident in the bathroom. This did not sound like something a person would do before innocently handling a pistol.
And there was more.
35. She Had Two Strikes
In the trial, Longet insisted that she and Sabich had a good relationship that was moving forward. Officers got a hold of her diary, and it actually said the opposite. The relationship was souring. The illicit substance and the diary ended up becoming huge points against Longet. But then something came out in the trial that changed everything.
36. They Made Mistakes
Maybe the Aspen authorities lacked experience with a case like this one because they handled it poorly. First off, they hadn't got a warrant for taking Longet’s blood sample. The same went for the diary: no warrant. Both of these pieces of evidence went out the window.
But the bumbling didn’t stop there.
37. They Mishandled The Weapon
Of course, having the weapon right there should have helped prosecute Claudine Longet. Again, Aspen authorities made a mess of this. One inexperienced officer on the scene wrapped the pistol in a towel, which was not up to standard. He then put the weapon in his glove compartment and left it there for several weeks. With errors like these, it looked like Longet would leave the courtroom a free woman.
But she wasn’t free yet.

38. Her Story Didn’t Make Sense
Longet’s story was that Sabich was teaching her about pistol use and accidentally got shot. But the autopsy did not correspond with her story. According to the report, when the pistol went off, Sabich was standing almost 2m (6.5 ft) from Longet. He was also bent over. Even more suspiciously, Sabich had his back to her. This didn't sound like the position someone would be in when they were demonstrating something.
It didn’t look good for Longet.

39. It Went To A Jury
The prosecution could not use a lot of the evidence due to errors made by the Aspen force. But there was the position of the body that made Claudine Longet look bad. The jury would have its job cut out for it. The trial had taken four days, but the jury only took four hours. They found her guilty. It looked like she’d be away from her kids and behind bars for a long, long time.
But this guilty verdict wasn't what you might expect.
40. She Got Off Easy
What the jury actually convicted Longet of was only a misdemeanor. It was negligence. What this meant was that Longet had to pay a fine, which the judge made so low it was a joke. She paid a measly $250. But there would be time behind bars. Again, the judge was lenient. He gave her a 30-day sentence, which she could serve on weekends.
Longet must have been on cloud nine. But not everyone was as happy.

41. She Made Them Angry
As you can imagine, Sabich’s family was not happy with this super lenient judgment. They had lost their beloved son in what seemed like an open-and-shut case. The woman who they thought had purposefully ended their son’s life was getting no more than a slap on the wrist.
And then Longet did something to stoke their flames of anger.
42. She Took A Holiday
Remember, Longet’s ex-husband Andy Williams had paid for her legal defense. A good thing too, as she got off easy. The lawyer Williams had paid for was Ron Austin. The crazy part? Before Longet had even served her tiny sentence, she went off on a holiday to Mexico with Austin. To make it look even worse, Austin left a wife and family to be with Longet.
The Sabich family was now out for revenge.
43. She Wasn’t in the Clear Yet
Sabich’s family decided to go after Longet. After all, she’d gotten away with fatally shooting their son and even found an immediate love replacement in her lawyer. They were angry, and they wanted revenge. In May 1977, they filed a civil lawsuit against Longet.

44. She Has To Keep Quiet
The Sabich family took Claudine Longet to court, and they wanted results. What they got was an out-of-court settlement. All we know from this is the fact that Longet can never discuss or even write about the settlement or what happened that night in her bathroom in Aspen, Colorado.
Authorities closed the case, and Longet prepared to disappear.

45. She Settled Down
After the trial, Longet decided to try to keep out of the spotlight. Of course, it didn't help when she married the man who had helped her avoid a lengthy prison sentence. In 1985, she tied the knot with Ronald D Austin. Strangely, they decided to reside in Aspen, where local residents still eyed her with suspicion.
Longet may have wanted to stay out of the spotlight. But the spotlight found her.

46. They Made Fun Of Her
On April 24, 1976, Chevy Chase and Jane Curtin appeared on NBC's Saturday Night Live as announcers for the fictitious Claudine Longet Ski Championship. In the sketch, skiers are heading down the mountain until there’s a loud shot and they hit the snow. Chase ends the sketch with, “It was an accidental shooting by Claudine Longet”.
Longet was becoming a pop culture icon for all the wrong reasons.

47. She Made The Cover
In 1978, the Rolling Stones were releasing their album Some Girls. For the cover art, they wanted to include pictures of “some girls” who had become celebrities and some who were infamous. They included Longet’s image on the cover, but when some celebrities complained, the band reissued the cover without the celebrities.
But the Rolling Stones were not through with Longet yet.
48. They Told Her Story In A Song
On their album Some Girls, the Rolling Stones had a song especially dedicated to Claudine Longet. “Claudine” had lyrics like “she shot him once in the head” and “there’s blood in the chalet,” which would be hugely contentious. The lawyers of the band had clearer heads than the Rolling Stones and told them to drop the song from the album. In 2008, the Rolling Stones reissued the album with “Claudine” on it.
Eventually, Longet decided it was time to leave Aspen.

49. She Had An Island Getaway
In 2023, Longet and Austin sold their Aspen property for close to $60 million. At their advanced ages, the climate of the Rocky Mountains was getting to be too much. Luckily, they also had a residence in Hawaii. Longet and Austin lived peacefully, enjoying their island lifestyle.
But not everyone has forgotten what happened that night in Aspen.

50. They Hold A Grudge
While Claudine Longet relaxed on the beach, there are some folks back in Aspen who can’t quite forget Longet’s infamous night. The prosecutor on the case against Longet was Frank Tucker, and he was pretty sure that Longet was guilty. Tucker once gave a quick synopsis of what happened at her trial. He said, "When a celebrity walks into court through the front door, justice walks out the back”.
51. Her Story Came To An End
On May 14, 2026, Claudine Longet passed on at the age of 84. Her career achievements and many happy years with Andy Williams were overshadowed by her involvement in her ex’s death, and headlined nearly every obituary for the one-time singer and actress.
