Off-Beat Facts About Chaka Khan, The Unwitting Queen Of Funk

Life Outside The Box

Chaka Khan has been bending genres and breaking charts for decades, so it’s no wonder she can’t stand being boxed in as just the “Queen of Funk”. After a life packed with wild twists, near-mythic comebacks, and a vocal range that could knock out a grown man, she deserves a title way bigger than that. Something like: “Queen of Surviving Absolute Chaos and Still Hitting the High Notes”.

1. She Had An Unusual Start

Born in the early 1950s in Chicago, Chaka grew up in a pretty unique environment. Her father lived life as a “beatnik”, the kind of person who indulges themself in a bohemian lifestyle. And while that sounds kind of fun for a kid, and might help explain the eclectic woman she grew into, things at home weren’t as free-spirited and fun as you might imagine.

In fact, some things actually proved to be downright terrible.

2. Things Went Left

Reportedly, Chaka’s father didn’t just have a taste for unconventional living, he also had quite the issue with using dangerous substances. And while the reasons for what happened next aren’t explicitly tied to his addiction, it very likely played a part. By the time Chaka turned 10, her parents divorced. But the worst was yet to come.

3. He Went AWOL

Chaka’s father didn’t just leave her mother, he left his children too. He basically disappeared for the next five years, leaving his family to figure things out on their own. But things weren't all bad at home. And though the shifting social landscape in the US at the time promised some impending trouble, someone special inspired her love for music.

4. She Fell In Love

According to Chaka, her grandmother sparked her love of music early on by introducing her to jazz. That influence lit a fire in her, inspiring her to explore melodies, emotions, and rhythms long before she ever stepped into a studio. But just because she couldn’t quite get into a studio yet, didn’t mean she couldn’t find a way to perform…

5. She Did Her Thing

Chaka Khan created her first girl group, the Crystallettes, at just 11 years old. But while she nurtured her creativity at home, the world outside was changing fast, especially in Chicago, where the Civil Rights Movement was erupting. And soon, a 13-year-old Chaka found herself drawn into the fray.

6. She Stood Up

In the late 1960s, a young teenage Chaka started getting involved in the movement. In fact, she ultimately met one of the famed leaders of the Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton, and officially became a member herself. While she advanced in her social activism, she also started experimenting with spiritualism, which ultimately led to a pretty major life change.

7. She Earned Her Name

Chaka’s parents named her “Yvette Marie Stevens” at birth. The name we’ve come to know her by—Chaka Khan—came along in the late 1960s. She attended a Yoruba naming ceremony around that time, and a priest dubbed her Chaka, meaning “woman of fire”. The name certainly fits her as the icon she became, but as you might imagine, a teenager getting up to such monumental activities in the streets might not be the easiest to deal with at home.

And unfortunately, things came to a head for her and her family right at the turn of the decade.

8. She Acted Out

By her own admission, Chaka Khan often behaved very rebelliously during her childhood. She hated the Catholic church her family seemingly attended, and often skipped out on classes. She much preferred to spend her time with the Panthers, and seeing what she could get up to outside of a school building. But at age 16, she took things just a step too far.

9. She Got Held Up (Literally)

While the details remain hazy, something she did at 16 seemingly pushed her mother over the edge. Reportedly, her mother smashed her against a wall, holding her by the neck. She even remembered how her “feet touched air” during the whole debacle. When she finally released her daughter, Chaka made a decision no teenager should have to.

10. She Ran Away

Chaka Khan left home for good, finding shelter in a commune. But she didn’t just leave home, she also stopped working with the Black Panthers and officially dropped out of school. With all of the usual teenage obligations thrown off of her, Chaka began singing in spots around the city. Sometime around then, she gave a performance that changed the way she saw music altogether.

11. She Made It Rain

One special night during those tumultuous teenage years stands out to Chaka as the moment that changed everything. She went out to a night club, the Burning Spear, and made an unplanned performance, joining in with the band to sing an Aretha Franklin song. As she sang, the audience members started throwing money on stage. In that moment, she saw dollar signs—music could mean money!

You might expect that to send her straight into hustle mode, but she was still just a teenager, and prone to certain “distractions,” so to speak…

12. She Fell Hard

During this time, Chaka Khan ran into a young bassist named Hassan Khan. The two fell for each other in no time, and spent lots of time together both listening to music and using substances. Totally caught up, Chaka wanted to marry her young love. 17 years old now and back on speaking terms with her mother, she requested her approval—which her mother denied.

But, of course, she was far from the kind of girl who’d take a “no” from anyone, even (or especially) her mother.

13. She Plotted

Instead of waiting a few more years, Chaka lied to her mother, insisting she was already carrying Hassan’s baby. With that, the two married in 1970, officially giving her the moniker her many fans know her by. As you probably already guessed, that particular marriage didn’t last very long. In fact, it ended the following year. But in better news, just a few years later, she caught the eyes of another man—one who had some very different types of plans for her.

14. They Recognized Her

During one particular performance in 1972, two members of a local funk group, Rufus, took notice of Chaka’s talent. The timing proved immaculate. They’d just lost their own lead singer, Paulette McWilliams, and thought Chaka fit the bill to take her spot. She agreed to join them, which ultimately earned them the attention of another famous (soon to be infamous) man in music.

15. She Dodged A Bullet

Before long, Rufus and their new lead singer impressed another music mogul of that time: Ike Turner. He flew them out to his own studio to have them record, but Chaka Khan completely took the spotlight. Turner loved her so much that he actually wanted her to join his own band as an Ikette. She ultimately declined, saying she was “really happy with Rufus”. If you know anything about Ike Turner and his relationship with Tina Turner, you’ll know she probably made the right decision.

But lucky for her, it didn’t take too long for her to receive even bigger validation—and this time, with the funds to back it up.

16. They Hit The Big Time

Things really started looking up for Chaka and the band in 1973 when they signed with ABC Records. Now well-equipped with a powerful team being them, they released their debut album, Rufus. However, despite everything seemingly set up for success, things didn’t go nearly as well as they hoped.

17. They Flopped

Despite a few pretty popular singles, including a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Maybe Your Baby,” the album turned out to be a commercial failure. Interestingly enough, there was another major life event happening for Chaka Khan right around that time—though whether or not that’s at all related to the failure of the album is all up to your own interpretation of things…

18. She Had Her Own

That same year, Chaka Khan found out she was pregnant. She’d been dating a man named Rahsaan Morris, and birthed their child, Indira, in 1974. There’s not many surviving details about the relationship itself, probably because it turned out to be another one that didn’t last long. Lucky for Chaka, though, things in her career soon turned around for the much, much better.

19. She Got Something Good

In 1974, Rufus took over the airwaves with the single “Tell Me Something Good,” a song Stevie Wonder expressly worked on for Chaka. The song ranked third on the Billboard Hot 100, and even went on to win the group their first Grammy. In other words, it proved an incomparable success.

While, in many ways, it became the start of all things Chaka Khan, it also started spelling the end of some vital relationships…

20. She Shined Too Bright

After the huge success of their single, Rufus moved out to Los Angeles to be right in the midst of the action of their new stardom. Unfortunately for the band, it seems they’d gotten a little too successful—especially Chaka Khan. The real trouble started when the record company decided to change the name of the band to “Rufus and Chaka Khan”. As you might imagine, that didn’t go over too well with the rest of the band.

21. She Tried

For what it’s worth, Chaka Khan didn’t actually approve of the name change at all. She tried to push back against the label, but they basically gave her an ultimatum: perform under the new name or hit the road. The choice was clear. And while Chaka expressed to the band that she didn’t care to be more of a star than any of her bandmates, the cracks had started to show.

Lucky for them, however, they still managed to make some ridiculously impressive moves…

22. They Kept It Moving

The band's next album, Rags to Rufus, went platinum with iconic hits like “You Got the Love”. But despite the members of the band and the incredible music they made together, the show ultimately became about the leading lady. When they did live events, the audience came for her incredible locals…and something a little more naughty.

23. She Used Her Body

Chaka became known for her costumes. She often showed off her body, leaning into her sensuality as part of her appeal. In what seems like a bit more problematic choice, she sometimes wore traditional Native American clothing to perform as well. Regardless, though, the people loved her.

Unfortunately for her, the outpouring of adoration couldn’t seem to quiet her inner demons.

24. She Lived On The Edge

Looking back on that era, Chaka’s memory of the time appears a lot less star studded as it seemed from the outside looking in. She worked up to 14 hours at a time with the band recording at the studio, and spent copious amounts of the rest of the day using substances and getting high. And on one night in particular, she nearly brought an early end to the incredible run of success she’s known for today…

25. She Did Too Much

On that night, Chaka Khan struggled to fall asleep, feeling emotionally low. She took a sleeping pill to help her doze off, and when it didn’t work, she decided to take another. The next thing she remembered is waking up in an ambulance. Thankfully, she survived that terrifying ordeal. But interestingly enough, one very important person happened to enter her story just at that moment, and is seemingly the reason she survived at all.

26. She Found Him

Reportedly, while under the influence of those pills, Chaka made her way into her neighbors house just before completely passing out on the floor. Her neighbor, Richard Holland, called the authorities, who managed to get to her just in time. And while the rest of the story is lost to history, what the two did next certainly is not.

27. She Tied The Knot (Again)

Chaka married Richard Holland in 1976. It’s quite possible the two found lots in common once she actually got better, but it’s also quite possible they just bonded over the trauma of it all. And that second explanation seems a lot more plausible considering how her new marriage affected her relationship with the band.

28. He Didn’t Like It

Holland didn’t like the way Chaka Khan dressed for her performance. He thought it was too provocative, and pressed her to start dressing more modestly. If you’ve been paying attention, you already know she refused to listen to him. Regardless, though, his interference started causing even more issues with her band members. Even so, Chaka continued working with the band, releasing hits like “Once You Get Started” and “Sweet Thing”.

But near the end of the decade, the winds of major change finally started to blow.

29. She Went Solo

In 1978, Chaka signed her first solo deal with Warner Brothers Records. She didn’t completely leave Rufus, though. While other band members came and went, Chaka returned to the band several times and sang on several albums right through to the band's final album in 1983. But once she signed on for her solo album, she released a single that shot her stardom right through the stratosphere.

30. She Blew Up

Chaka’s first solo album features the hit “I’m Every Woman,” a song written just for her by Ashford & Simpson. The album went platinum, cementing Chaka as a global phenom all on her own—no Rufus needed. But while things on the career front seemed golden, things in her personal life began to fall apart.

31. She Faked A FairyTale

Despite the tiffs with the band, Holland and Chaka’s marriage appeared picturesque. They lived on a Malibu ranch with her daughter, surrounded by animals, while Holland made strides in his music-management career. From the outside, it looked like a true fairytale. But all that glitters certainly isn’t gold.

32. They Didn’t Make It

By 1979, the cracks began to show. Though they didn’t divorce right away, the couple separated—and during that uncertain period, Chaka Khan made an unexpected choice about who she leaned on for comfort.

33. She Circled The Block

On the heels of her split with Holland, she started banking lots of studio hours with an old friend, Ike Turner. He seemed like her solace through the rough times, and she called him a “real inspiration and a catalyst emotionally and in other ways as well". Honestly, not sure what that means, and it all seems fairly suspicious considering Turner himself separated from his own famous wife just a few years prior.

Either way, though, the writing was on the wall when it came to her own “happily ever after” with Holland.

34. He Called It Quits

Despite four years of marriage and a son together, the two officially called it quits in 1980. Holland took the lead on officially ending things, filing for the divorce under “irreconcilable differences”. Regardless of her unstable life behind the curtain, it seemed nothing could keep Chaka from shining on stage. For a while, anyway.

35. She Kept It Going

Chaka spent the rest of the decade going from strength to strength. She dazzled through the 80s with her next several albums, releasing hits like “Be Bop Medley” and “I Feel For You”. And as she sang her way into the 90s, it truly seemed she could do no wrong—which probably explains the shocked response to her next big music decision.

36. She Quit

In 1996, Chaka Khan officially left the Warner Brothers Label. The departure seemingly came out of nowhere, considering her decades of success with the label. However, when the dust settled, it turned out the singer, now much more mature than she’d been when they first signed her, had some very serious reasons for cutting ties.

37. They Played Her

According to Chaka, she cut her ties with Warner Bros because they just didn’t give her enough attention. Furthermore, they wouldn’t release her album Dare You To Love Me. Years later, she continued to assert they still had some of her music kept under wraps. Despite that setback, though, she made a huge comeback just a few years later, and with another extremely iconic name in music.

38. She Got With A Prince

In 1998, Chaka signed onto Prince’s label, releasing her next album, Come 2 My House, shortly after. She topped that release by actually going on a tour with the “Purple Rain” icon, continuing to display her talented vocals and ability to evolve with the times. And luckily for her, it seems the tides in her personal life were finally starting to turn as well.

39. She Got Clean

The next year, Chaka made a change that might’ve been one of the most important she ever made. Allegedly, she finally put an end to her concerted problems with substances in 1999. A few years later, in 2005, she claimed herself sober from alcohol as well. And while that sounds all well and good, it proved to be far from as straightforward and simple as it seemed.

Just as she seemed to get one thing under control, another shocking issue arose.

40. Her Son Got In Major Trouble

In 2004, Chaka’s son Damien, then 25 years old, lived in her home with his girlfriend and child. One evening, during a disagreement with a teenage boy—Christopher Bailey—the worst happened. According to authorities, her son opened fire on Bailey, ultimately taking his life. Damien turned himself in, but according to him, his friends, and Chaka, who testified on his behalf, things weren’t quite what they seemed.

41. They Told Their Story

According to Chaka and her son, the entire thing was an accident. Supposedly, Damien did take the boy’s life, but entirely by mistake. When the case went to trial, the court ultimately acquitted Damien, releasing him back home. And while she surely felt relieved for his freedom, the trial proved far from over.

42. They Didn’t Tell The Whole Story

According to another version of events, Damien and his family, including Chaka, all conspired to convince the courts that Damien didn’t intend to take Bailey out. Supposedly, he even went so far as to ask someone to hit and bruise him so it looked like he’d been in a brawl with the other boy. Regardless of where the truth actually lies, Chaka ended up paying—big time.

43. She Dropped A Bag

After Damien’s acquittal, Bailey’s family sued Chaka and her family for the unlawful end brought to their son’s life. They won their case, forcing Chaka to fork over $1.3 million dollars to settle up for her son’s behavior. Though she seemingly had the funds to do it, the stain remains on the records of her and her family. Perhaps an admission she made several years later helps explain why things never really did just go smoothly for her…

44. She Was Haunted

In 2013, Chaka appeared on an episode of Celebrity Ghost Stories. In the episode, she admitted that, for several years, she felt she’d been followed by some type of ghost or “shadow man”. Some might attribute that to her substance use, depending on whether you believe in ghosts or not. However, things reportedly turned around when she met another spiritual entity with a serious ultimatum for her.

45. She Faced The Facts

Chaka’s haunting reportedly came to an end when she came in contact with another spirit, one she called a “guardian angel”. She said they instructed her to change her ways, or face a soon coming end. According to her, that proved the end of her shadow man haunting. However, circumstances right around the corner proved it wasn’t the end of her inner fight to survive.

46. She Kept It Moving

Despite her struggles and getting up in age, Chaka showed no signs of putting down the mic through the 2000s and 2010s. She released what some critics considered a “comeback album,” Funk This, and received a litany of awards. So when she cancelled upcoming performances in 2016, the explanation came as a shock to the system.

47. She Went Back

In 2016, Chaka skipped out on performances and checked herself into rehab instead. This time, she alleged a different type of substance struggle, saying she’d been having issues with a prescription medication she originally needed for treatment. Thankfully, she completed treatment and returned to the stage, though not always to the fanfare she experienced throughout most of her career.

48. She Wasn’t Always Perfect

Though just about any professional musician can recognize the breadth of Chaka’s talent, her performances aren’t always note-perfect. In 2020, she sang the national anthem at an NBA All Star Game. Granted, it’s a fairly hard song to sing, but it should've been easy for the multi-time Grammy award winner. Unfortunately, the social media fanbase didn’t like it. At all.

49. They Hated Her

Social media users found her performance so terrible that they compared it to another notoriously bad rendition of the anthem, Fergie’s 2018 attempt. Despite that small blip on the radar, though, no one can deny Chaka’s talent. Her voice has found ways to remain iconic throughout the decades, and she’s got the awards to prove it.

50. She’s Every Woman

Over the course of her career, Chaka Khan received numerous awards, including a stunning total of 10 Grammy Awards, multiple gold and platinum albums, and even an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And at the ripe age of 72, she shows no signs of stopping, regardless of what life throws at her. “Every woman”, indeed.
