Observers said June and Jennifer walked together, copied each other’s gestures, and sometimes performed ordinary movements at nearly the same moment. June called part of their communication “eye language.” To outsiders, it looked eerie. To the twins, it was simply how their shared world worked.

Officials eventually placed the sisters in separate institutions. Jennifer remained at the Eastgate Centre for Special Education, while June was sent to the St. David’s Adolescent Unit. The hope was that distance would force them to communicate with other people. Instead, June became almost completely withdrawn and barely moved.

Jennifer kept being rejected

Then everything went too far
In 1981, June and Jennifer turned to theft, vandalism, burglary, and setting empty buildings ablaze. They targeted several properties, including a tractor showroom, and wrote about some of their actions in their diaries. Their rebellion was reckless, destructive, and about to bring a punishment neither sister had imagined.

Their own words helped catch them
Police arrested the twins while they were trying to ignite another empty building. A search of their bedroom uncovered bags filled with diaries, poems, stories, and accounts of what they had done. A journalist found them before the trial
Sunday Times journalist Marjorie Wallace first met June and Jennifer in 1982 while they were awaiting trial. She gained access to their writings, continued visiting them, and became one of the few outsiders the sisters trusted. What she eventually learned would make their story even stranger.

They were sent to Broadmoor
In 1982, the 19-year-old sisters were ordered into indefinite detention at Broadmoor, Britain’s high-security psychiatric hospital. Their offenses were serious, but Broadmoor housed some of the country’s most dangerous patients. A short burst of chaos would cost the twins nearly all of their twenties.

Eleven years disappeared
June and Jennifer remained at Broadmoor for approximately 11 years. They were medicated, closely monitored, and sometimes kept on separate wards. Their writing slowed and their hopes faded. The sisters who had once dreamed of fame began to wonder whether they would ever leave.

Broadmoor did not end their dependence on each other. It intensified it. The sisters continued to compete, clash, reconcile, and retreat into the same relationship that had controlled their childhood. By then, both seemed to believe their bond was the reason neither of them could ever be free.

Despite their famous silence, both sisters gradually began talking more openly to staff, other patients, relatives, and Wallace. Losing Jennifer would not suddenly give June the power to speak for the first time. But the twins still believed something much larger stood between them and a normal life.

Wallace fought to get them transferred
Wallace publicized the sisters’ case and campaigned for them to be moved out of Broadmoor. As the possibility of a transfer grew more realistic, June and Jennifer began talking about what life apart might mean. That was when Wallace learned of the agreement promised at the beginning of their story.

Then came the real pact
According to Wallace, the twins had come to believe they could never both live normal, independent lives. One sister's life would have to end so the other could fully live and finally form relationships and exist outside their shared world. Their bond had become so suffocating that permanent separation seemed like the only way to break it.

Jennifer would be the one
Wallace said the sisters had discussed which of them would be the one to go and ultimately decided it would be Jennifer. Broadmoor staff reportedly told her the twins had even argued over the decision. There was never any established method or evidence that either sister intended to deliberately bring about that outcome.

It was tied to the day they left
According to Wallace’s account, the sisters linked the agreement to the day they finally left Broadmoor. Jennifer reportedly believed that once they were transferred, she would have to be gone so June could begin a new life. It sounded like another piece of their private mythology—until the transfer day arrived.

They finally left Broadmoor
On March 9, 1993, June and Jennifer were transferred to the medium-secure Caswell Clinic in Wales. They were both 29. It was an important step toward rehabilitation, but it was not full freedom. June would remain at Caswell for roughly another year.

Jennifer said she would not make it
June later said Jennifer had been acting strangely before the journey. Her speech was slurred, she felt ill, and she reportedly told June that she would not make it. June did not take the warning seriously at first. Jennifer had made dramatic declarations before—but this time was different.

She became unresponsive beside June'
During the trip, Jennifer rested against her sister and became increasingly unresponsive. June described her as sleeping with her eyes open. When they reached Caswell, Jennifer needed help getting out of the vehicle, and staff quickly recognized that something was wrong.
Her condition suddenly worsened
Jennifer was examined and put to bed at Caswell. She appeared to improve briefly, but tests revealed severe haemolytic anaemia, and her condition soon deteriorated. She was urgently transferred to a neighbouring general hospital. Doctors were unable to save her.

Jennifer did not survive the day
Jennifer Gibbons passed away on March 9, 1993, less than 12 hours after leaving Broadmoor. A post-mortem found massive acute myocarditis, a severe inflammation of the heart. The inquest jury officially concluded that she had passed from natural causes.
Doctors could not fully explain it
The pathologist considered viral or unexplained myocarditis the most likely cause. A reaction to prescribed medication could not be ruled out completely, but there was no evidence of a toxic substance or any deliberate act by Jennifer or June. Medically, the pact did not explain what happened.
The timing was almost impossible to ignore
Jennifer had reportedly agreed that she would be the one to go when the sisters left Broadmoor. Then, on the exact day of their transfer, she became ill and did not survive. There was no proven plan—but the timing made the pact impossible to separate from what happened.
June was suddenly alone
Jennifer’s passing ended the relationship that had controlled both sisters’ lives. June grieved deeply, continued her rehabilitation, and later lived independently. She had already begun speaking before losing Jennifer, but without her sister, she was finally forced to build a life that belonged only to her.
