42 Disturbed Facts About Halloween's Michael Myers, The Original Slasher

“I met him, 15 years ago; I was told there was nothing left; no reason, no conscience, no understanding in even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, of good or evil, right or wrong. I met this... six-year-old child with this blank, pale, emotionless face, and... the blackest eyes—the Devil's eyes. I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up because I realized that what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply... evil.”—Dr. Samuel Loomis, Halloween (1978).

1978’s Halloween introduced one of the big screen’s most iconic horror villains, preceding other icons like Jason and Freddy Krueger. With a new Halloween film coming out later this year, complete with the return of its original protagonist, we wanted to delve a litter deeper into the origin story and mind of the silent killer. Here are 42 disturbed facts about Michael Myers.

42. This is a Mike Myers Mask

Remember the scene in Baby Driver where one of the robbers accidentally buys Austin Powers’ masks instead of Halloween ones? As in, the character played by Canadian comedian Mike Myers, not the creepy villain Michael Myers? The scene was actually originally supposed to use two Halloween masks, but the plan/wish was shut down by the makers of the new Halloween film.

Myers was portrayed by Nick Castle in the original film, while James Jude Courtney will handle most of the bodywork for the upcoming sequel. Courtney will be handling most of the kill scenes, while Castle will help in a “limited capacity.”

39. Icebreaker

The 2018 Halloween film ignores all of the previous sequels, serving as a direct sequel to the 1978 original. As a result, the characterization and added backstory that Myers had over nine films is removed. Director David Gordon Green remains adamant that Myers is “the essence of evil… He has no personality. He has no interests.” I don’t know, Dave, he seems pretty interested in killing people!

Designer Rick Sternbach revealed that while working on Halloween II the crew only had one mask left. Sternbach got around to finding the phone number molded into the mask’s neck, and got a hold of Don Post Studios. The employee verified the mask was a Captain Kirk one and graciously offered to give the crew a box of them, as long as they were credited.

Myers nearly wore an Emmett Kelly clown mask instead. During production, the crew considered using a clown mask as an homage to Myers killing his family while wearing one. However, after seeing the William Shatner mask, the crew decided to go with their second choice, since the mask was emotionless and therefore creepier. People who are scared of clowns might disagree.

Hill and Carpenter drew inspiration from Samhain, the Gaelic festival. Samhain viewed Halloween as a time when spirits attack the living. So, in a way, Myers is an angry spirit who can’t be killed.

27. No Pun Intended

Myers was influenced heavily by Carpenter’s own experience with mentally ill patients. During a college trip, he visited a mental institution in Kentucky and came across a patient “12 to 13 years old.” Carpenter remembers being unsettled by the patient’s “schizophrenic stare,” which he described as “unsettling,” “creepy,” and “completely insane.”
