When you consider, for example, what people believed in the Middle Ages, you can appreciate how far humanity has come. In the last few centuries or so, we've adopted science and reason to an incredible degree. And that commitment to discovery has opened up a whole brave new world for the average person to learn about. We understand our place in the cosmos more than we ever could have imagined.

For centuries (millennia even) a person's knowledge of the universe was pretty much limited to the category of "Things your parents know about". Conducting an experiment, at least in a formal sense, would have been totally foreign. Whereas today, the internet has a bounty of things to learn. All the findings of all the scientists who've worked for the last couple hundred years are fair game.
