That is, everything seemed swell until the year she turned 11—and everything started to change in the absolute worst way.

2. She Lived Through An Early Tragedy

In 1933, Barbara lost her father Frank in one of the most horrific ways imaginable. After losing all his money in the stock market crash, Frank took his own life, funnelling carbon monoxide into his car while idling it in the garage.

Barbara wasn’t even a teenager yet, and she was already facing enormous trauma. And as though that's not bad enough, there’s even more to this sad story.
