40. Entourage

34. Curb Your Enthusiasm

As HBO’s longest-running scripted comedy series, Curb Your Enthusiasm easily became one of television’s most iconic sitcoms. This iconic series followed four women in New York as they dealt with life’s ups and downs. Issa Rae’s groundbreaking series, Insecure, followed her character as she explored adulthood and all the trials associated with it. 26. Westworld

Inspired by the 1973 film of the same name, Westworld followed a theme park where guests can live out their Wild West dreams without consequence. Its early seasons expertly explored the philosophical and ethical questions of humanity but it petered off as the show continued. However, for this next series, let’s instead head eastward.

25. Mare Of Easttown

Mare of Easttown was a mini-series about a detective investigating a murder in her small town while navigating her personal issues. Once again, this isn’t a new idea, but audiences fell in love with the series for its ultra-compelling narrative and grounded approach to family difficulties. Obviously, these kinds of thrillers are often the best HBO shows.

24. Oz

An HBO series many call underrated, Oz centered on an experimental prison wing, with its various staff members and inmates. Despite falling to the backburner among similar shows, this was one of the earliest to focus on more explicit and heavy subject matter, along with complex societal issues.

This anthology series follows different investigations with a new cast each season. 15. Flight Of The Conchords

Although Flight of the Conchords featured fictionalized versions of Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, the two had already formed the real titular comedy band. Scandal Behind The Scenes Of Euphoria

Euphoria is praised for its gritty depiction of high school addiction and friendship, but it seems unlikely that we'll get another season—and some say it’s because of disturbing controversies behind the scenes.

First it began with a noticeable lack of screen time for Kat, played by Barbie Ferreira. Rumors swirled that tensions between Ferreira and showrunner Sam Levinson led to her parts in the show being cut and her eventual exit from the series altogether. 

But the controversy got worse when people learned that Levinson had planned more steamy scenes for Sydney Sweeney's Cassie—especially since the overt sexualization of the character had already been raising eyebrows for fans and critics. Speaking with Variety, Sweeney admitted that she "never felt comfortable" filming the scenes in the first place, and that she and co-star Minka Kelly had to push back against including so many of them in the final cut.

It’s not often that one gets a glimpse of the deadliest islands in North America. Located just off the coast of San Francisco, the Farallon Islands are usually hidden by a thick curtain of fog, but on clear days they appear as a hazy silhouette in the distance.

Only a few brave researchers live on the islands, which are now a wildlife refuge. The Farallon Islands are off limits to the public—and not just to protect the animals.

There’s a reason they call these islands the Devil’s Teeth.

Where Are The Islands?

The Farallon Islands are a group of 20 islets in the Gulf of the Farallones. They are about 30 miles from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and 20 miles from Point Reyes, a popular tourist destination.

A Place To Avoid

Before they were called the Farallon Islands, Native Americans called them the “Islands of the Dead”. They believed the islands were haunted and avoided going there.

In more recent times, the Farallon Islands have been called the “Devil’s Teeth Islands” because of all the dangerous, sharp shoals beneath the water.

Southeast Farallon Island is the largest island, spanning an area of more than 95 acres. The island is shaped like a pyramid and rises 357 feet above sea level.

The First Man On The Isles

Sir Francis Drake was the first European to step foot on the islands and record his visit. In July 1579, Drake’s crew went ashore on the islands to hunt seals and collect bird eggs to eat. 

Drake named the archipelago the Islands of St. James, but only one of the islets carries that name now.

Their Name

The islands received their official name in 1603. Friar Antonia de la Ascencion saw the islands during his expedition and described them in his diary as “seven farallones close together”. 

“Farallones” means “cliff” in Spanish.

The Farallon Islands are home to more than 400 species of birds, including half of the global population of ashy storm-petrels. The islands also host the largest colony of western gulls in the world.

With so many birds on the islands, the noise can become unbearable, especially during the mating season from May to July. Even in the winter, when there are less birds, the researchers have to wear earplugs to get to sleep.

Five different species of seals call the islands home. The northern elephant seals were almost hunted to extinction during the 19th century fur trade, but they started repopulating the islands in 1959.

Deadly Waters

The waters around the Farallon Islands are notoriously dangerous. Fast currents can easily sweep boats into the rocks, and there are craggy sholes beneath the waves that cause just as much damage.

Shark Season

Great white sharks are another danger near the Farallon Islands. September is especially busy, as they circle the islets, hunting baby seals and sea lions. If you’re feeling brave, you can go cage diving with them.

Size Matters 

The great white sharks near the Farallon Islands are unique because they are some of the world’s largest great whites. The average length of a fully grown shark is 13 to 16 feet, with females being bigger than males. 

The female sharks in the Farrallones typically grow nearly 20 feet long.

Shark Names

Since many of the sharks return every year, the researchers can sometimes identify individual sharks. They’ve been known to give the animals names based on their scars and overall appearance.

Whales are also attracted to the marine life and opportunities for food near the Farallon Islands. Blue, gray, and humpback whales are the most common species that can be found in the summer and fall. Orca whales have also been spotted around the islands.

What's That Smell? 

The Farallon Islands are infamously stinky. All of the bird and animal poop emanates from the islands and can be smelled by ships half a mile away.

Did People Ever Live There? 

The first recorded cases of people traversing and living on the Farallon Islands begin in the early 1800s. The maritime fur trade was booming at this time and seal hunters flocked to exploit the resources of the island.

Hunters from New England were the first to pillage the Farallon Islands, but Russian hunters were the first to actually live there. 

From 1812 to 1840, they operated a sealing station in the isles. Each year, they caught anywhere from 1,200 to 1,500 seals.

Trouble For The Seals

The seal population began to noticeably decline in 1818. Eventually, they were completely eradicated from the Farallon Islands. 

The seals didn’t return to the islands unto the 1970s, with the first newborn pup discovered in1996. Since then, their population has grown, and more than 2,000 seals are born on the Farallon Islands each year.

A Different Kind Of Gold

After the fur trade quietened down, people had no interest in the Farallon Islands. That is, until the days of the California Gold Rush. Food was scarce so people braved the harsh waters around the Farallon Islands, hoping they could harvest some eggs from the seabirds.

The Farallon Islands are still home to the largest the colony of nesting seabirds in the contiguous United States. During the Gold Rush, their eggs became a high-value commodity. 

By the 1850s, egg-hunting companies were gathering 500,000 eggs each month.

In 1863, rival egg-hunting companies clashed in a conflict that was called the Egg War. When two rival companies came to blows over territories, the dispute ended with men slain on each side. 

Even with the bloodshed, the hunters continued to decimate the seabird population, just as they’d done with the seals, until the federal government forced all commercial eggers to leave the islands.

Invasive Species

The egg hunters introduced a new species to the islands’ ecosystem: house mice. Coming from the hunters’ ships, the mice have become one of the islands’ biggest pests. 

There are so many of them, that researchers can see the grass moving as they run through it.

A Tiny Community

The first lighthouse was built on the islands in 1855. It was the second lighthouse to ever be built on the West Coast. 

To watch the lighthouse 24 hours a day, four keepers lived on the islands with their families. Two of the homes are still standing today.

Danger Zone

From 1946 to 1970, the waters around the Farallon Islands were a dump site for radioactive waste. 47,500 55-gallon steel drums of waste were dumped near the islands. 

Because it was mostly lab materials with traces of radioactive contamination, most of the radiation near the islands decayed by 1980.

The Army Moves In

During World War II, the United States Navy setup a high-frequency direction finding (HFDH) radio station on the island. The radios were capable of tracking merchant ships and Japanese warships on the far side of the world, in the Western Pacific Ocean.

Who Lives There Now? 

Now, only a group of researchers and scientists inhabit the islands, on Southeast Farallon Island. They live at one of the old homes that belonged to the lighthouse keepers and, for the last fifty years, have recorded the wildlife population trends on the islands.

Can Tourists Visit The Islands? 

People are not allowed to visit the Farallon Islands. In 1974, they were officially designated as a wildlife sanctuary, which is now called the Farallon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. The waters around the islands are also protected.

People who want to see the islands will have to take a boat tour and look from afar. If you want to actually explore one of the smaller islands, you can do so only with special permission from the government.

One of the openings to this submerged wonder is a flooded cave known as Cenote Angelita, which hides a magical secret of its own.

From above ground, the Angelita Cenote looks like a beautiful, large pond deep within the dense jungle. But below the surface it is a massive flooded cave that drops a whopping 204-feet deep, hiding many intriguing secrets.

The cenote was created when the ground collapsed and water poured in, slowly deteriorating the limestone walls, hollowing out the space.

It was once worshipped by the Mayans as a holy site, hence its name; “cenote” meaning “sacred well” in Mayan. "Angelita" means "Little Angel".

Basically, there is a thick cloud of hydrogen sulfide gas that forms between the saltwater and the freshwater, creating a false floor halfway to the bottom.

The saltwater is denser than freshwater, so it will always stay on the bottom. When the gas mixes with the saltwater, it also become denser than the freshwater and sits below it.

The illusion is a spectacular sight—it looks like a river that runs underwater.

The hydrogen gas is released by microbes that thrive on the sea floor when they breakdown organic waste. As debris and bacteria fall into the cenote, as they break down, they release hydrogen sulfide.

Yes, you can swim through the cloud to reach the darker, deeper parts of the cenote—which is also the saltwater portion of the cenote.

Is the gas toxic?

Yes, the hydrogen sulfide is poisonous and has a very sulfurous smell—like rotten eggs. It is safe to dive in and around since you are breathing from your dive tanks.

However, you can still smell the rotten egg smell through your regulator.

Below the cloudy “river” the dark cave tunnels continue for another 100 feet or so, mostly full of jungle debris. It is pitch black and diving becomes increasingly dangerous.

Just below the cloud is a small mountain of jungle debris. It consists of the land that used to cover the cenote before it collapsed, known as a Talus Cone—aka a debris mound.

It piles up in a pyramid shape from the very bottom of the cenote, and the peak reaches just above the cloud, almost like an island poking up out of the mist.

Speaking of unrealistic: This plot contrivance was so out-of-character and forced that it deeply rankled fans of the show. There was no point to this and it robbed the Cameron character of any genuine depth.

This was truly a bizarre plot device. For a show rooted in grim reality, introducing something so unlikely seemed like a huge cop-out. It seems like the writers eventually agreed that this had been a waste of time: Cyril, the guinea pig for the treatment, simply reverse ages when the pill wears off and the whole plot device is just dropped.

Friends: Ben's Whole Existence

Ben was introduced as a way to show how difficult the divorce was for Ross. The problem was, the writers clearly didn't want to deal with the character beyond a few forced plotlines and in the end, Ross just seemed like an absentee father. In the final seasons, Ben just seems to disappear as if he never existed.

Friends: Rachel And Joey’s Romance

This was perhaps the worst contrivance in the whole run of Friends. In an attempt to add some complexity to Ross and Rachel's relationship, Rachel and Joey were thrown together. It felt wrong, it added nothing, and it made fans cringe.

Community: When Britta And Troy Dated

Although Troy shows an interest in Britta as early as the first season, nothing really ever came of it. Then, suddenly in the fourth season, they were together but there was no chemistry and no real point to it other than as an extension of Troy and Abed's relationship. Britta deserved better but then again, it was “the Gas Leak Year”, so it didn't really count as canon.

This will forever be a source of debate among Community fans—with the show's creator Dan Harmon fired by the network, the fourth season was, to be charitable, hit-and-miss. Previous plotlines were abandoned, and new ones were introduced, only to be abandoned in the fifth season upon Harmon's return. Dubbed in-universe as “the Gas Leak Year”, whatever happened in the fourth season may or may not have actually happened and, fortunately, "Changnesia" was forgotten as a gas leak-based collective hallucination.

Will And Grace: Leo Cheating On Grace

This storyline always felt like it was created to make sure Grace would still be close to her friends. However, it seemed cheap to fans as it was out of character for Leo and it was not clear why Grace couldn't be in a happy relationship and still be with her friends.

When a show is coming to an end and there are still some loose threads to wrap up, writers can sometimes get carried away. This plot device always seemed to be a little much so late in the series.

There was nothing wrong with the April character; it just felt like it came too late in the show's run. Meant to obviously add a twist to Lorelai and Luke's relationship, it also felt like a bit of a Cousin Oliver Syndrome: Rory was grown up and the writers felt the show needed a young girl to keep that early magic going.

Grey's Anatomy: Izzie's Intimate Relationship With Her Ghost Boyfriend

Grey's Anatomy has had a long run: It just started its 21st season. For broadcast television, that's a long haul, especially with the new reality of streaming series. It's no surprise, then, for a long-running show to resort to soap opera plot devices, but Izzie having an intimate relationship with her dead ghost boyfriend is maybe a device too far.

Shameless: Ian And Lip Finding Out Ian Is Not Frank’s Son

Fans seem to be divided on this one: Finding out that Ian is not Frank's son but in fact the son of one of Frank's brothers is actually fitting for the show's tone. That they spent exactly one episode looking for Frank's brother, assume Clayton was actually Ian's dad and then never mention it again is probably where the problem lies.

Desperate Housewives: Tom Finding Out He Had A Daughter Before He And Lynette Were Together

Often, a plot device is introduced to add some problems for existing characters. However, when this introduces unpleasant new characters—the previously unknown daughter's mother is horrible and is then killed off and the daughter is a brat who treats Lynette terribly—the fans feel cheated by a cheap storyline. The whole thing is then rendered totally pointless when the daughter is sent off to live with grandparents and is never mentioned again.

Glee: When Blaine And Karofsky Dated

What happens when an anti-gay character (and Kurt's high school tormentor) starts dating Blaine? Karofsky literally threatened to kill Kurt in high school, causing Kurt to transfer schools, but that didn't seem to matter to Kurt's ex, Blaine. It did matter to fans, though, who view this as a betrayal of a beloved character and a trivializing of Kurt's very real trauma.

Glee: When Finn Kissed Emma Right Before Her Wedding To Mr Schue

Love triangles are a classic plot device. When handled well, fans love it. In this case, it was arbitrary and contrived and added nothing to the show.

Didn't Glee already have a character in a wheelchair? Nothing wrong with there being more than one, but not if it's merely a flimsy plot device quickly forgotten. Quinn is confined to a wheelchair after a car accident but by the time of the Nationals, she's dancing like it never happened.

Never a show to deal with reality, giving Spencer an evil twin on Pretty Little Liars was maybe a step too far into daytime soap opera territory. Fans generally consider the final season to be a waste.

Scandal: The Whole Olivia Kidnapping Storyline

Speaking of soap opera plots: Scandal was always over-the-top and that's why fans loved it. However, Olivia's kidnapping storyline was a sign that the writers had no idea where to go with the show and they didn't know how to wrap things up.

13 Reasons Why: Bryce's Redemption Arc

Whenever 13 Reasons Why tried its hand at serious topics, the results were bad. However, they hit a new low when they tried to get viewers to sympathize with Bryce and allow him redemption—after Bryce had subjected several women to the most heinous acts imaginable.

Character development is hard. Sometimes, the easiest route is getting two characters together and seeing what happens. In the case of Emma and Spinner getting married on Degrassi: The Next Generation, there was no chemistry, no real relationship development, and really no point.

Another way to develop characters quickly is to give them something really bad to do. Mr Simpson, Emma's stepdad, was seen as a wholesome character and having him cheat on Emma's mom with his boss, the school vice principal, is something that came out of nowhere—it was out of character, and it ruined a good character for no good reason.

Gossip Girl: Lily And Rufus Meeting Their Son

Characters are often introduced to add something to a stagnant storyline or to give neglected characters something to do. When Lily and Rufus met their son on Gossip Girl, what was probably meant as a device to help the characters develop ended up adding nothing to the overall series and didn't help any of the characters' progress. And of course, the son is never mentioned again.

The pregnancy plotline: a television classic that rarely works out and is usually a sign of desperation in a series' later seasons. Hayley's return to Dylan and subsequent pregnancy was seen by fans as Dylan's ruin. Instead of Dylan getting together with Andy, this is what the writers gave dedicated fans instead.

Stranger Things: Eleven Finding Her Siblings

With their shorter seasons and longer waits between seasons, writers of streaming series have a bit more time to think things through. Nevertheless, this didn't stop the writers on Stranger Things from coming up with a stand-alone episode that literally came out of nowhere, had no impact on the overall story, and was never mentioned again.

Actors' real lives often impact a show's development. When Zooey Deschanel was on maternity leave, it was felt Jess' absence needed to be filled, so Reagan was brought in. To fans, this was pointless and Jess merely being away rather than being replaced would have been preferable.
