Truckers Share The Most Unforgettable Things They’ve Ever Witnessed On The Road

Being a trucker is no ordinary job. Spending hours and hours in the middle of unfamiliar places can lead to bizarre experiences. Whether it’s a brush with the paranormal, a time when something went completely different than expected, or a time when something happened that just can’t be explained, every trucker definitely has at least a couple of unforgettable moments from their life on the road. Here are 42 perfect examples of what those kinds of moments can be like.

1. What Happens in Vegas

One time, I was driving near Las Vegas at around three in the morning. I had been following a few black SUVs along the highway for a good hour or so. They had Nevada plates that were each just single digit numbers, in order: 1, 2, and 3. Then all of a sudden, they all pulled off the highway down a dirt path. There was no mile marker or cactus that would indicate a path there. It was just dirt. After pulling off the road, they all turned their lights off. I didn't stick around. It was creepy.

2. Magic Carpet Ride

My great uncle was a long haul trucker. He swears that one time, he was driving down the road to see two guys pull a long, rolled up carpet out of the trunk of their car and throw it into a nearby river. Whether it’s true or not I don’t know, but it’s still weird and creepy nonetheless.

3. Dream Catcher

I was crossing the Navajo Nation on my way to Colorado in the 90s. It was around 1 am and I was really tired, so I pulled over between Gallup and Ship Rock. I had a nightmare that evil looking faces were coming at me out of the pitch black darkness, screaming. I woke up, started my car, and discovered that a coyote and jackrabbit were sitting about 10 feet apart right beside my car. I have never had a nightmare that freaky before or since. I have traveled that route a few times since, but never stopped after dark again.

4. The Red Scare

I used to drive by a particular marsh every night when I was going home from work. One night, I saw a car that had pulled over with its hazards on. The dude sitting in it was covered from head to toe in blood. There were no visible signs of any crash or specific injuries having taken place. He was just mysteriously covered in blood.

5. Facing the Truth

When I was driving down I-30 through Texas and Arkansas many years ago, I began to see what looked like the faces of animals repeatedly popping out of the bushes one after the other—but, each time, anything longer than a glance proved there to be nothing actually there. They had just repaved the highway, and there was hardly any traffic at that time. I was dead tired, and it was super dark out.

Highway hypnosis, maybe? Hallucination, I suppose? Magical ghost creatures, perhaps?

Whichever one it was, it was definitely the creepiest thing I’ve ever experienced on the road.

6. He’s a Real Nowhere Man

The creepiest thing I’ve ever seen was somebody walking along the shoulder of the highway all by themselves when it was totally pitch black out in the middle of the night, and there hadn’t been a town for miles and miles—nor was there one coming up for miles either.

7. A Dog’s Life

I was driving across the country once, and everything was going well—that is, until things started to suddenly get spooky shortly after I entered Louisiana. I saw a whole bunch of cars stopped on the side of the road near a swamp. I kinda felt the swamp calling to me, as if it wanted to pull over for some reason. Going about 60 MPH, I crossed over a short bridge and suddenly saw a little golden retriever puppy calmly lying in a little dog bed at the side of the road.

It freaked me the hell out. I’m a dog lover, but there was no way in hell I was stopping to find out why that one was there!

8. Clowning Around

I once saw a clown staggering down an alley in the city, with its back facing toward us, while we were coming up to a stoplight at about 1 in the morning. It looked like he was blowing balloons as he wobbled down the road all by himself. Not being able to see his face made the whole scene even more ominous. Who knows what the story was there…

9. What’s in a Name?

My uncle was a long haul trucker. The night that his father passed away, he had been traveling from Ontario to Florida. When he got the call from my mother to inform him of the news, he pulled into the next available truck stop to try and process the news. That was when he noticed that there was a bar right beside the stop—and the name of the bar was my grandfather’s exact first and last name.

He even took a picture of the sign and sent it to all of us. It was truly surreal.

10. Chain Gang

My dad was once hauling logs on a truck in Idaho and was coming down from near the Coeur d'Alene area during a snowy winter night. He was putting on chains before heading down a steep hill and said that all of the hair suddenly stood up on his body. It felt like there was something watching him. He looked back and, halfway down the switchbacks, he saw a large figure standing on a 20-foot tall embankment.

As he got closer, it jumped down and revealed that its shoulders were as tall as the cab of his truck. In a single bound, it leaped down and then leaped over to the other side of the embankment. At the time, he thought it must have been a Sasquatch. Now he says it was probably a "demon" trying to make him crash. He didn't stop to remove the chains until he was well away from the mountain.

11. Oh Deer!

I was driving late at night on California’s Highway 168 near Mono Hot Springs when I suddenly saw a deer stand up on its hind legs at the side of the road. I’ll never forget the way its eyes were glowing in my headlights as I passed it. I nearly pooped my pants that evening.

12. Life in the Fast Lane

While driving home from a trip late one night, something in my gut just told me to merge over, so I did. Then, about a quarter of a mile later, there was some guy just casually sitting in the middle of the lane that I had just been in. It freaked me out like nothing else had ever before.

13. Queen of the Road

I was a 23-year-old girl. My new husband and I had decided that driving as a team would be a fun adventure after college, rather than jumping right into the 9-5 lifestyle. I was down in Arizona on my own one time, driving down a long stretch of nothing at about 4 in the morning when a guy pulled up next to me waving his CB radio in the air. I never left mine on, because I found listening to all those guys’ BS all the time to be irritating. But, this guy obviously had something he wanted to tell me, so I turned it on.

Upon turning it on, the guy told me that I had blown a tire. I thanked him for letting me know, figuring that I would stop at the next truck stop to take care of it. But for some reason, the guy kept harassing me for the next 40 miles, telling me to pull over right away and check my tires. I finally got to the next town and stopped at the first possible chance I had. I got out and checked my truck. There were no blown tires anywhere. I have no clue what that guy would have done to me if I had pulled over on the highway—but I am so glad that I trusted my gut and didn’t stop.

14. Who Goes There?

While driving a big mining truck, I saw people running out of the dark on a mine site in the middle of the night. They thought that I was a cop who had busted them trespassing, but the truth is that I was just a passerby who wouldn't have even noticed them if they had stayed still. It was both incredibly dangerous and incredibly stupid.

15. The Circle of Life

I’m a professional truck driver of 15 years. Here is the most interesting thing that has ever happened to me on the road. Coming into Albuquerque, New Mexico at night from the west is amazing. You're driving through dark desert, and then all of a sudden you come over the top edge of a hill and the entire city is now laid out below you. There is then a long stretch of downhill to get into the city, as in several miles.

So, I come over the hill, cruising down as one would at 2 in the morning, when a whole bunch of motorcycles all start suddenly passing me. Not just a few, like dozens and dozens of them. They are all lit up in neon ground effects, there are guys are standing on the backs of the seats, there are girls taking their tops off to flash me as they go by, and they all begin doing circles and swerving back and forth around my semi—all without any explanation.

There must have been over 100 of them by the end of it. After the circling had gone on for about 10 minutes, they all suddenly took off one after the other—probably doing at least 150 mph. The entire thing was completely surreal and I'll definitely never forget it.

16. Lickity Split

I used to haul saltwater off of wellsites in Oklahoma on the night shift. I was standing at the rear of my trailer one time. As I was loading everything out, I suddenly heard the sound of gravel crunching—almost as if someone was walking towards me. I then started to get that feeling like I was being watched. I stepped around the trailer towards the sound and shined my flashlight at where it was coming from. Turns out it was just a cow licking the side of my trailer.

17. A Heavy Load

I am a log truck driver in the Pacific Northwest. We go up into the woods on logging roads and haul logs back from the loggers to sawmills. We start work very early in the morning every day, usually somewhere between 2 to 5 am—so it's still dark out when we start, obviously. One of my co-workers and I pulled away from the job and started to head down the logging road.

After a couple miles—after the load had settled a bit—he decided to pull over and throw his remaining wrappers around the load. As he is tying his load down, he looked back and saw a mountain lion watching him from ten feet off of the end of his trailer. He slowly backed up to his driver door and got in. By the time he looked in his mirror, the lion had disappeared.

Now, while this story was not paranormal or anything like that, it sure was pretty damn creepy. We see lions and bears fairly often out here, but to be that close to one while outside of the truck without even noticing until it had already been staring right at us—that’s something I never want to experience again. We definitely face different kinds of obstacles up in the woods than highway drivers.

18. The Joke’s On Who?

Back when my dad was a truck driver, he stopped to sleep in a lot one night. The guy who he had leased his truck from just happened to have seen him parked there, so in the morning, when my dad went to use the restroom, this guy thought it would be funny to use a spare key and hide in the sleeper. Once my dad was back inside and ready to leave, the guy reached out and grabbed him. My dad said he freaked out so badly that he just bailed and jumped out of the truck. It was moving around five miles per hour at the time.

19. Glowing in the Wind

The creepiest thing I’ve ever experienced on the road is having a bunch of smashed up fireflies on my windshield leaving a bright glowing splatter from my hitting them after they had lit up—without having realized what they were.

20. Who Let the Dogs Out?

I was once driving along I-15 in Idaho. There was a stray dog walking down the road. He stopped, sat down, and began to stare right at me as I approached. I then suddenly got this strong, ominous urge to pull over, so I did. He jumped right up into the cab and I rode off with him. I then pulled into the nearest truck stop, where the dog got out and wandered off.

Sometimes, I wonder if it was a ghost pup of some sort, or if maybe some trucker had forgotten his dog and the dog figured out that the best way to find his owner again would be to look for a truck—or perhaps the dog was simply hitchhiking. In any case, the sensation of feeling like I just had to pull over for that dog was definitely the weirdest thing I've ever felt in my life. He did have a cute little bandana, though, so maybe that was part of it.

The whole thing made me feel like I should get a trucker dog to keep me company on the road—but it's a rough lifestyle, so I wouldn't wish on anyone.

21. That’s the Spot

I had a long haul trucker as a roommate for a while. He used to tell me about driving on I-70 across the midwest plains at night, and all the UFOs he would see in this one particular spot. He was clearly freaked out by some of it.

22. Fight or Flight

I'm not a trucker, but I was headed from Salt Lake City, Utah to Albuquerque, New Mexico late on a Friday evening one time. When I got into Southern Utah and near the Arizona border, I had gotten tired enough to need to pull over and sleep for a bit. I took a county road off of some highway exit and was driving down it to pull off so that I could get some rest without any headlights interrupting me.

At about 3 in the morning, I suddenly saw lights come on right behind where I had stopped, with a large Dodge truck shining its lights right into my rearview mirror, blinding me. I try to pull over a bit so that they can get around me. My heart was already beating fast and I was getting very creeped out. They pull over behind me.

I take off and try to lose them. But I am in a lousy old car, and they are in a pickup truck with four-wheel drive on a road that they are familiar with. It becomes clear that I'm not going to be able to lose them. They're swerving behind me, they're trying to pull up beside me, and they're flicking their lights. This was a very scary experience, to say the least.

I thought it through and had no idea what road I had pulled off of, so calling 911 wouldn't have helped me since I couldn't have told them where to show up to help me. Regardless, this emergency was happening now and I needed to deal with it. It was a fight or flight situation, and my flight was not working. So, I decided to fight.

I always travel with a small weapon of some kind, and what I had this time between my driver’s side door and my seat was a very large hunting knife. So, I pulled my emergency brake suddenly and slammed to a stop. As soon as my car stopped moving, I got out and started running at the truck. They then threw it in reverse and started backing up. I could see inside of their truck now.

It looked like it was just some teenagers on the bench seat. After all that, they were probably just some kids out trying to have some fun at my expense—but to me, it really felt like I was being attacked and that they might have been trying to kill me. I still think back on it with a lot of fear, because it was just such a helpless situation that I hope no one ever has to go through again.

23. Walk Away From the Light

My dad has several stories from his days hauling logs in Idaho and driving trucks through Utah and Nevada. My favorite, though, is actually just from his regular pickup truck going through Utah. He said that there was a strange light that was keeping pace with him out in the desert on a moonless night. It kept pace for a minute before it disappeared and his truck turned off. He stopped and turned it back on, then pulled off at the next diner. The folks in the diner called it a common occurrence.

24. Head in the Clouds

I once saw what I thought was just a cool shaped, low hanging cloud far off in the distance while driving down the highway. Then I realized it was a tornado. That was not a fun day from that point on.

25. Look, Up in the Sky!

When I had gotten into local driving, my route used to run near an Air Reserve Base in Indiana, so I would see planes and helicopters flying by pretty often. One night, at about 2 in the morning, I was heading over to pick up another load when I suddenly saw a bright green light appear at the corner of my windshield. It was far too low to be an aircraft. It moved pretty slowly for a bit, then it darted away and I lost sight of it behind some trees as I drove by.

Sounds like your typical "I saw a UFO" story, but the skeptic in me still thinks it was probably just a helicopter or a jet that I had seen at the perfect angle for it to have appeared that way. The jet pilots have broken the sound barrier over town a couple of times in the past, causing a sonic boom, so a jet flying in an abnormal manner isn't necessarily out of the realm of possibility.

26. Have You Seen the Trailer?

My dad is a truck driver. About 13 to 15 years ago, while resting at the side of the road, he woke up in the morning to find that his entire trailer had been robbed empty. My dad has never been a heavy sleeper, but his cargo could not possibly have been stolen without at least a forklift. Everyone in the area would have been woken up by the sound of a forklift unloading a massive trailer. My dad suspects that the robbers must have used a pump to get some kind of chloroform into his cabin—to make sure he couldn’t wake up.

27. No Laughing Matter

I’m a stand-up comic. I often refer to my profession as being a trucker with jokes. While driving near the north end of mainland Michigan one time, I saw a car stopped on the side of the highway. We hadn’t seen a car for a while, as it was 2 AM. I commented to my buddy, “poor sucker!” But as soon as we passed the car, its lights came on and it got back on the road. Odd timing, right? And then, it began gaining on us.

I told my friend to speed up, and he did. He sped up more and more as the car kept closing in. We were doing 120 and this guy was catching up to us. We saw an exit with a hotel, so we took it and drove right in front of the building—where it was well lit and we could see the front desk clerk clearly. The car got off at that exit, too. It drove into the hotel parking lot right behind us. Then, it turned around and got back on the highway. I’ll never know what that guy wanted from us—and I’m more than fine with that remaining a mystery.

28. Thunderstruck

I was driving through Kansas on I-70 at night once when I hit one of the craziest thunderstorms I’ve ever seen. It was so bad that the road started flooding a bit, so I had to pull into a service plaza and wait it out. That’s when the creepy part happened. As I was sitting in the truck watching the storm, a series of lightning strikes were followed by a blackout.

Suddenly, a massively bright light started moving around behind the clouds, too slowly to be an aircraft but too fast to be part of the storm system. It moved up over the hills and trees before crossing directly overhead, then disappearing just behind the service plaza. If anyone has any thoughts on what in the world that might have been, I’m all ears. The memory still bugs me, as I’m not prone to conspiracy theories or crazy outlandish beliefs at all.

29. Dances With Wolves

Last winter, I saw a wolf chowing down on a dead moose carcass on the side of the road—three days in a row, and in three different places.

30. Dust in the Wind

I was driving along the 5 in the middle of nowhere at night when I saw this bright light seemingly hovering a couple of hundred feet above the ground. It then dropped down to ground level before rising back up to where it was. It then went out. I saw the process repeat itself a few times in a row—hovering, dropping to ground level, back up, then disappearing. Finally, I got closer and realized that it was just a crop duster with lights on it, dusting some crops in the middle of the night. Is that a thing? I guess so!

31. Probably Not What They Had in Mind...

A few years ago, some animal rights activists managed to release thousands of mink from a farm next to a large road, in the middle of the night. The road was more blood than tarmac for miles as I was driving along. There were animal remains everywhere—and don't even get me started on the smell.

32. Rave On, Scotland

I’m a truck driver in the UK. I was driving through rural Scotland one night going down a country lane, when all off a sudden I started to see flashing lights coming through the trees. They were lights of all colors, just flashing over and over again from behind the trees and causing some really freaky looking shadows to appear on the road.

I’m not a believer in aliens or anything like that, but my first thought when I saw this was that it had to be UFOs. As you’d probably expect, it’s safe to say that I put my foot down pretty hard and got the hell out of there immediately. I found out the next day that it had just been a rave that was taking place in a nearby field—but, at the time, I had no interest in sticking around to find out!

33. Developing a Cult Following

I was coming back home from a trip to Michigan when I saw several groups of people at different times walking down the side of the road wearing matching, cult-like robes. The first time was in a town, the second on a highway, and the third in a park. Each time I passed one of the groups, the members all started staring at me.

34. Ghost Riders

Not sure if I've ever told this one before, but this is my dad's story. Just to explain, he is ex British Army—so he is not scared of anything and is also super practical. He became a lorry driver in about 1975 I think, and this was not long after he had started. This happened at about 5 in the morning on a summer's day. It was a bit misty and bright like it tends to get early some mornings, and he was heading out of London on the A3.

He's driving his lorry, and up ahead was a young woman in her early 20s in a long blue dress standing by the side of the road. It must have been before the A3 was dueled when all of the barriers were put up. So my dad sees her and thinks she must be waiting for a ride to work. Just as he's about to go past her, she suddenly jumps in front of his lorry. He immediately slams on the breaks—sure that he must have hit her. However, he didn’t feel a bang and, when he got out to take a look, he was unable to find her anywhere.

A couple of cars stopped to see what was going on. Dad shakily explained, and the drivers kindly offered to stay while he looked for her under the lorry. He looked, and she was still not there. Other drivers looked and found nothing. No body, no blood, no sign of anyone ever having even been there. They all freak out for a bit, and then decide that leaving as soon as possible is a great idea! He can't explain it to this day. He knows that she was there and that he hit her. He spent the rest of his driving career avoiding that route.

35. Funeral March

I was a touring musician for about ten years, so I spent a lot of time on the road. Typically, we were driving in the middle of the night, but occasionally we had travel days also. I have seen many accidents of varying degrees of injury over the years, but one still sticks out to me more than any of the others. We had just finished playing in Austin, Texas, and we were making our way to LA to start a tour there the next day. Since we were in the same city for a week, we were all pretty well rested—which meant that everyone was awake and full of energy.

We were having a fun conversation when we crested the top of a hill, from which we could suddenly see that traffic was completely clear on the other side of the highway. Then, about half a mile down on our side, it looked like four lanes were completely backed up and no one was moving. We were joking about what might be holding up traffic when we approached the accident.

Turns out there was a GMC Envoy, the very same car that I owned at the time, that appeared to have rolled maybe five or six times, and had landed perfectly balanced on the cement median between the highways. All of the windows were gone, including the windshield. About 20 feet from the car, we saw the body of a woman and the body of a child—both of them very obviously dead. Everyone was completely silent for the next hour or so, until we pulled over and decided to take a break. Not because we physically needed one, but I think we all just needed to quit thinking about what we had seen.

36. Sounds Pretty Awful

On this very night, exactly ten years ago, on the same stretch of road I still drive down regularly to this day, in the middle of a dense fog, I saw the worst accident I have ever seen in my entire life. There was this indescribable sound, almost like a garbage truck being dropped off the top of the Empire State Building. And then, I had the great misfortune of seeing the driver’s dead body being pulled out of his truck, looking completely burned and unrecognizable. That was one of the most disturbing nights of my life.

37. A Truly Horrifying Occurrence

A family friend of mine who is a trucker once got into an accident with a pickup truck full of drunken teenagers. Neither he nor the kids inside could manage to get the doors of their vehicle open, so he was forced to watch them all get burned to death inside. He had nightmares about it for years afterward. He owns his own trucking business, too. It’s pretty amazing to me that he still stuck to the job after going through all of that, as I know I would definitely not have been able to handle that and would have changed jobs for sure.

38. In Control, Even When Out of Control

Driving south on I-75 in Ohio during the dead of winter, I once witnessed a compact car (like a Cobalt or something similar) as it got on the on-ramp to merge onto the I-75 North and lost control. The vehicle went sideways and fell at least six feet off the ramp, onto the shoulder of the interstate and miraculously landing on all four of its wheels somehow. It then spun 360 degrees and proceeded to merge into traffic as if nothing had even happened.

Blew. My. Freaking. Mind.

The CB radio was going completely nuts for a solid five minutes after that. The sentiment of "HOLY COW, WHO ELSE JUST FREAKING SAW THAT?" was shared in several different ways.

39. To Eat Is Human

A good friend of mine told me this story years ago. He is the stereotypical old big, bad trucker type. I've seen some weird stuff with him while driving in south Texas along the border. He never batted an eye at any of that stuff—but while telling me this story, he had goosebumps all over and a concerned expression on his face. From this guy, that was basically the equivalent of a trembling lip and poop-stained pants. I'll tell this story in the first person, the same way he told it to me:

Years ago, in the late 90s, I was on my way to pick up a load in Laredo from my house in central Texas. It was early morning, probably around 4 or 5. I had just come off of a string of days at home, so I know that I wasn't overtired or anything like that. I am on one of those two-lane winding roads in the absolute middle of nowhere when I suddenly see something on the side of the road at the edge of my high beams. At first, I just thought it was roadkill, as is usually the case. As I get closer, though, I see that it is roadkill—but there's also someone crouching over the deer carcass.

I remember thinking that either this guy must have been taking the antlers as a trophy, or he's just some weird sicko. As I got closer still, I could now clearly see that this guy was eating the freaking deer! He's pulling chunks of meat out of the stomach with his bare hands and bringing them up to his face over and over again. Then, as I’m getting closer, he stops in mid motion and looks up at me. Not at my truck, but directly at me. He stands up, and that's when I realize that this is no ordinary guy. It is some huge, brown, non-human creature covered in hair from head to toe.

I remember being terrified at this point and thinking that I was in serious trouble. This thing was standing on the tiny shoulder looking right at me. By this point, maybe a good three seconds have already passed and I'm about to pass the part of the road that he's standing at. I didn't even think of stopping—in fact, I'm starting to lay on the gas so I can get the hell out of there as fast as possible. As I'm passing it, it’s still looking at me.

Again, it’s not just looking at the truck—it’s looking through the driver's side windshield directly at my face. He obviously had the intelligence to understand that there was a driver in there, and he knew exactly where inside the vehicle I would be sitting. As I started to pass him, our eyes met and I remember seeing what looked unmistakably like human intelligence in its eyes, despite the fact that this creature was clearly not human. It still scares the hell out of me every time I think back upon it.

40. Just Bee Strong

I was headed west on I-76 here in Denver, just cruising along at about 70 miles per hour. Out of nowhere, I suddenly saw a massive, almost solid cloud of what appeared to be dirt coming right at me. I'd say it was at least 20 feet wide and 10 feet tall. I scanned ahead of me, but couldn't see any vehicles that it could have came from.

With nowhere to go, I slowed down and took the hit, hoping that there wasn't anything big enough in the cloud to come crashing through my windshield or to jack up my truck. I am the owner and operator of the company, so it would have actually been a major issue for me if there had been any damage done to my vehicle, but I really had no choice at that point but to just sit back, hold on tight and hope for the best.

It was pretty loud as I smashed through it, and the instant it hit I knew that it was definitely not dirt. I immediately hit the washers because I couldn't see a damn thing through all of the carnage, as my windshield was suddenly painted with guts. Turns out it was a swarm of bees—as in freaking abnormally huge bees that sounded like rocks when they hit the car. I can't even imagine what seeing that swarm would have been like if I had been walking instead of driving, they would probably kill the crap out of anything in their path.

41. It All Changed in One Moment

I used to work with an ex-trucker who once had a woman commit suicide by jumping in front of his truck as he was moving down the street at a fast pace. He hasn't driven since, and now spends most of his time working with troubled and suicidal people. He has never been quite the same again since the day that happened.

42. Bathroom Break

I just had my first ever scary rest stop adventure two weeks ago. My girlfriend and I were driving back to Los Angeles from Arizona, and we stopped at a little place on the 10E just after Coachella Valley. It was about two in the morning. I really had to pee and she did too. As we pulled in, there were a bunch of trucks and cars parked all over the place—but we didn’t see a single person. No matter where we looked, there wasn’t a single soul to be found.

We were both getting a really creepy vibe from this place, but we also really needed to use the bathroom. So, I went into the bathroom first while she waited in the car with the doors locked. Upon entering the bathroom, I discovered a barefoot, very dirty man sitting on the floor under the sinks watching videos on his phone. Very weird, but I live in Hollywood—so I just avoided eye contact, did my business, and left.

When it was my girlfriend’s turn to go, I walked her over to the bathroom and waited outside. Still no human activity whatsoever other than the man under the sink. We get back to my little Subaru and grab some snacks from the trunk to eat in the car. That was when I happened to catch a glimpse of headlights approaching in my mirror.

A massive old 70s Sedan is slowly coming towards us, and I can see even from a distance that it’s filled with about four or five men. Their windows are down, and they pull into the spot immediately next to us. Mind you, I parked nowhere near any other cars, but they pulled up right beside us—of all the places they could have picked.

Before they came to a stop, my spidey senses started tingling. I jammed my car into reverse and flew backward as soon as I heard their driver start yelling “Hey! hey! hey!” to try and get our attention. We booked it out of the stop, and I did a good 90 on the 10 for a few miles. I can’t say for sure what would have happened if we had stayed, but I don’t think they were planning on just asking for directions!
