“People say I make strange choices, but they’re not strange for me. My sickness is that I’m fascinated by human behavior, by what’s underneath the surface, by the worlds inside people.” – Johnny Depp.

Few actors are as celebrated and decorated as Johnny Depp, and for good reason! Johnny’s tremendous talent and dedication to acting has made him a worldwide icon. Here are some of our favorite facts about Johnny Depp.

32. Golden grillz.

Johnny Depp’s character Captain Jack Sparrow is portrayed as having gold teeth in the Pirates movies. The gold teeth were actually Depp’s idea, but he predicted that executives would want fewer gold teeth, and told his dentist to implant more gold teeth as a bargaining tool.

As such, Sparrow’s final number of gold teeth in the movie was what Depp had envisioned all along.

31. Talent birthed in pain.

His parents divorced when he was young and he had family problems. As a way to deal with the pain, he began to cut himself, which resulted in self-inflicted scars that he still has today. In a 1993 interview, he reflected on this by saying, “My body is a journal in a way. It’s like what sailors used to do, where every tattoo meant something, a specific time in your life when you make a mark on yourself, whether you do it yourself with a knife or with a professional tattoo artist.”

30. Rock and roll… right out of the education system.

He dropped out of school at age 15 in the hopes of becoming a rock musician. But just two weeks after dropping out, he went back to school but shockingly enough, the principal would not accept him back in. He advised Depp to pursue his musical career dream.

29. A little switcheroo.

We have Nicolas Cage to thank for his acting career! He got into acting after a visit to Los Angeles, California, with his former wife, Lori who introduced him to the actor. Nicolas advised him to pursue acting instead of music.

28. A few rings later…

He got married for the first time in 1983 to Lori Anne Allison, the sister of his band’s bass player and singer. She was a makeup artist. Depp and Lori were divorced two years later, but he didn’t stay single for long. He got engaged to Jennifer Grey, which later fell through. He then got engaged to actress Sherilyn Fenn. Wow, that’s a lot of engagement rings!

27. Yummy peanut butter.

During the TV series 21 Jump Street, Johnny Depp became increasingly frustrated with the series, so he began to put forth ridiculous suggestions for his character to the producers.

One such a suggestion included the discovery by the other characters that Tom Hanson was obsessed with peanut butter, and would be discovered by the other characters smearing it all over his naked body.

26. Committed to change.

Depp has a long-standing working relationship with director Tim Burton, and it all began when Depp starred in Edward Scissorhands. Depp later said, “within 10 minutes of hearing about the project, I was committed.” After the success of Edward Scissorhands, Johnny made a decision to never repeat the same characters but to always challenge himself with new and different roles to play.

25. Kind to those in need.

He co-owned a nightclub in LA called The Viper Room, which opened in 1993. It was outside this club that River Phoenix collapsed and died of drug-induced heart failure on the sidewalk. While he owned The Viper Room, Depp would randomly give out $50 and $100 bills to homeless people outside the club.
